The Toolmanger Newicon Template
This template is based on my workbench screen. I use only Newicons.
MWB icons I passionately dislike. There is no standardization of
size. They vary from huge to very small. MWB may have many fine
attributes, but for me their deficits outweigh their qualities.
This template only works for Amiga with OS 3.0+. It requires the
Prefs utility WBPattern. WbPatterns allows selection of a backdrop
picture on the workbench and for windows as well. The most you
can hope for with OS under 3.0 is patterns.
If you have a standard backdrop picture, temporarily replace it
with this one. Load Toolmanger and configure as normal. Move your
Newicon to cover the desired red block. Continue until you are
done. Save and then change your WBPattern backdrop to what you
normally use. Reboot and see the finished results.
Since Toolmanger has a test function, you might use it to insure
the alignments are correct. Newicons do have some variation in
size. Usually, no more than a pixel or two.
This grid will accommodate 72 Newicons. My drive icons are upper
left down and marked with a "D". You may have more or less drives.
Position your icons anyway you want in the grid.
Included is a text file with the icon positions indicated per my
system. I use this whenever I change icon positions or add new
icons to the grid. It is a good reference.
The relative pattern is 51 horizontal by 62 vertical. The vertical
is larger to accommodate the icon name. If you do not use icon
names it can be tightened.
I do not use Toolmanager docks. I have nothing against docks. I
just do not like them.
I do something else which may be of interest to you.
I like my drive icons to appear where I want them to be. For this
purpose I have two directories in my S directory. They are named
Bootup and Drives. Bootup contains scripts. Drives contains the
disk icons for my devices.
Here is why. Do the following:
1. Position your disk icons wherever you desire. Do not use the
window Clean Up to do this (unless you like the Clean Up
locations). Next, use window Snapshot All to write the icon
positions.
2. Load up your favorite disk manager (DirOpus or whatever) and
create the directories Bootup and Drives in your S Directory.
3. Now, for each drive, rename its disk.info to your drive designation,
ie, DH0.info, DH1.info, DH2.info, and so on. Copy each one of these
renamed disk infos into the S/Drives directory.
4. Now create a script for the S/Bootup directory to copy these
renamed disk infos to the workbench. I have included my S/Bootup
scripts. There is more than one. I have changed the disk icon
positions several times, and keep the scripts just in case I
change my mind and want to go back to an older pattern. You will
find these scripts and my disk icons in the S directory as part
of this archive.
Play with this awhile and let me know if it works. Or use the method
to develop some uniform way of fixing icon positions yourself.
Whatever you do...enjoy your Amiga. Could be the best is yet to come.
Suggestion: Download Aminet/biz/dbase/F-BASEV2.0.LHA. Try it out.
You will find it has many good uses.
