Maybe. Is this the longest VS840EX recording in existance? Probably. The Roland VS840EX is an 8 track digital recorder which uses 250MB Zip disks as storing media. In the recording mode I used (the best allowing 8 tracks), you have 125 minutes in total. Recording all 8 tracks, you can at most come up to 125/8=15.6 minutes. As every little recording you make is stored (allowing for undo etc), it's actually easy to fill a disk with a normal 4 minute song. How I could record this 29 minutes long piece of music on this machine is a mystery even for myself. Especially since I used absolutely no midi sequencing at all! Yes, that's correct - NO MIDI SEQUENCING OR MIDI TRACKING. So this is a total break from my mod music period. In this recording, I played Synth, Guitars and Drums. The synth is the Ensoniq SQ-1 plus: [ Ensoniq was a synth company started by former Commodore people: Al Charpentier (VIC, VIC-II Chip Designer), Robert Yannes (SID Chip designer, C64 Systems Designer), and Charles Winterble (VIC-II, SID, C64 Project Manager). Commodore engineer Bruce Crockett also joined. ] The Ensoniq SQ-1 plus has a 16MHz MC68000P12F inside by the way. The drums in Space Ride was made in a quite strange way. I used the VS840EX metronome to send MIDI to the synth. I think I did this twice with different settings and different tempos to create the drums that then were copied many times after each other as a drum loop. This remix (Nov 2006) was done on a Roland VS1680. I could obviously not remix everything because of all of the bouncing I had to do on the VS840EX. (Bouncing = Mixing down tracks to fewer tracks to free up both tracks and recording space). The purpose of the remix was better sound quality and better mix. I liked the music so much that I thought it deserved to sound as good as it could! If you have the "Boray plays some guitar" CD, you may notice a little difference between part 1 and 2.
